Adoption Piece by Piece

Pulling the Pieces Together

The three books that make up the "Adoption Piece by Piece" trilogy are exceptional resources for parents and professionals dealing with special needs and, singly or together, for every adoptive family.

Whether you read all three volumes of "Adoption Piece by Piece" straight through (as I did), or focus first on areas of specific interest and then use it as reference resource over time, one, two, or all three of these books should be in your library.

The concept for the books originated with SNAP Canada (Society of Special Needs Adoptive Parents), but don't make the mistake of thinking they're only for families and professionals dealing with special needs, or only for Canadians. It's true that references to services, the legal system, and most of the adoption resources are Canadian (and more specifically, in British Columbia), but the issues and topics addressed cross all national boundaries and with a little creativity, these sources and resources can be located in other provinces and the U.S.

Volume 1, "Life Issues," deals with those issues faced by many adoptive families including grief and loss, attachment, identity, search and reunion, cultural issues, adoption by singles, gays and lesbians, grandparents and older persons, and more.

Volume 2, "Special Needs," identifies and describes the most commonly encountered special needs associated with adoption, and examines problems encountered achieving accurate diagnoses, getting adequate and proper treatment, and the transition to adulthood.

Volume 3, "A Toolkit for Parents," offers parents advice and specific strategies for dealing with systems (health care, education, legal), finding or creating support (groups, financial, self-help), and advocating.

Nothing is superficial here. You won't find any platitudes. Issues addressed are very real, from a doctor's article about mistakes made when treating fetal alcohol disorders to dealing with the courts when your child is taken into custody.

Each book is made up of articles by professionals (medical, legal, mental health, others) and parents who have found or are finding solutions. Information is concise, on-topic, and useful. Kudos to the editorial management of Sara Graefe (who also authored many pieces) and the team of individuals who brought this together.

"Adoption Piece by Piece" is available by individual volume or as a boxed set. It is published by SNAP Canada and Groundwork Press.
